Susan Thorpe (Calgary, AB) graduated with a B.A. in Visual Arts from the University of Western Ontario in 1974. She continued her ceramic education with the Waterloo Potters Workshop and in Calgary with the Alberta Potters’ Association. She benefited immensely from exposure to international ceramic artists at the Alberta College of Art and Design and the Banff Canter for the Arts.
Susan's sculptures are made of a unique blend of porcelain and stoneware clay and paper fiber. This blend is sculpted into animal forms often with comical, exaggerated gestures. The sculptures are fired in an electric kiln to approximately 2000F to ensure strength and then finished with patinas, acrylics or kiln fired again for additional colour.
"In my many years as a potter and ceramic sculptor, I have been joyfully obsessed with glaze and surface experimentation. I enjoy working with glaze chemicals, measuring, mixing and firing tests for texture and colour… to the extreme".
