Curator

About the Role:
The Curator is a key member of the Alberta Craft Council’s creative and administrative team. Reporting to the Executive Director, you will lead the Alberta Craft Council’s exhibition program, helping to grow the impact of craft in Alberta. The role requires a high level of arts administration, organization and independence, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced nonprofit environment. Strong communication, writing, and project management skills are essential, as is a genuine commitment to craft and community-building.

The Curator works collaboratively across departments and liaises with artists, curators, partners, and volunteers to produce high-quality, engaging exhibitions and public programing that reflect Alberta’s diverse craft community. The Curator ensures meaningful engagement with artists and audiences, supports membership, and helps the ACC maintain artistic and operational excellence.

The Curator role includes the development and delivery of the ACC’s annual Exhibition program, administration, artist communications and contracts, installation and logistics, producing exhibition texts, and contributing to marketing and promotional content. The Curator develops and oversees programming such as artist talks, Craft Tours, and hands on workshops. They are responsible for maintaining exhibition budgets and statistical tracking, and assisting with grant applications and reports. They may also support gallery operations, volunteer coordination, and event delivery as part of the ACC’s collaborative team environment.

The ideal candidate demonstrates a successful craft and arts administration background that will contribute to supporting artists in their creative careers and developing opportunities to connect the public to Craft and Culture in the Making.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate all administrative and logistical aspects of ACC’s annual exhibition program onsite in Edmonton’s Feature and Discovery Galleries, while working collaboratively with our Calgary Gallery for traveling exhibitions.

  • Manage the call for submissions process and schedule the program (ensuring alignment with the ACC’s mission and overall curatorial vision)

  • Coordinate with artists and guest curators to ensure seamless project delivery, including communications, contracts, and scheduling

  • Oversee installations and deinstallations, condition reporting, artwork handling, and shipping logistics

  • Contribute to curatorial planning and content development, including exhibition texts, artist bios, and interpretive materials

  • Collaborate with communications staff on marketing content, website listings, and press to promote exhibitions and related events

  • Oversee and deliver related public programs, such as artist talks, Craft Tours, workshops, and exhibition openings

  • Prepare written materials including exhibition texts, artist communications, and marketing copy (to support public engagement and donor/audience development)

  • Assist with grant writing, reporting, budgeting, and maintain exhibition and programming statistics to support organizational tracking and funding outcomes.

  • Support the development of content for ACC publications and annual reports

  • Foster a collaborative and supportive working relationship with staff, artists, committees, board members, and stakeholders

  • Support and train interns, volunteers, and gallery assistants as needed

  • Occasionally assist with operations, events, and retail when needed as part of ACC’s flexible team environment

  • Contribute to a positive, respectful, and inclusive workplace culture that reflects the ACC’s values

  • Help assess and improve programming through evaluation and feedback, with an aim to ensure artistic and operational excellence

Qualifications:
Essential

  • A degree in Craft, Fine Art, Art History, Arts & Cultural Management or equivalent professional experience

  • At least 5 years of experience in curatorial, exhibition programming, and arts administration

  • A strong understanding of contemporary craft practices and the nonprofit arts sector

  • Proven ability to manage exhibitions from planning through to installation and evaluation

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including writing for diverse audiences

  • Highly organized with the ability to juggle multiple projects, prioritize deadlines, and adapt as needed

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel); database and project management platform experience

  • Experience working in a nonprofit arts environment with a collaborative mindset

  • Availability for occasional evening and weekend events

Desirable

  • Familiarity with craft and design techniques, materials, and theory

  • Experience supervising volunteers, interns, or part-time staff

  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle

Overview of physical demands: This position requires basic physical fitness; it requires alternate sitting or standing, may require standing for a period of up 5 hours, climbing ladders and stairs, walking, carrying and lifting up to 50 lbs, handling and carrying of fragile artwork, overhead reaching, crouching, kneeling, and stooping.
