Sara Norquay - #ABCRAFT, ACC Feature Gallery Exhibition

The making of "Travelogues" by #ABCRAFT participating artist Sara Norquay

The ACC Feature Gallery exhibition #ABCRAFT features Alberta fine craft artists using digital technologies. It runs from April 2 - July 2, 2016 with an Artist Reception on Saturday, April 2, 2-4 pm.

#ABCraft looks at how digital technology is enhancing or impacting fine craft artists in Alberta. Social media, digital imaging and 3-D printing are becoming more common and an increasingly important career opportunity for fine craft artists. The exhibition features new and recent work by artists using digital technology in many ways including communications, marketing, research, image development, prototyping and production.

"We have all known people who make that bucket list whirlwind trip to places they have always wanted to see. The text for these books was found and adapted from comments on Facebook, a public place where people frequently post photos and comments on their travels. All personal references have been removed, leaving simple English sentences expressing enthusiasm. For the imagery of these books, the text has been turned into QR codes with hand inked figures added. The final pages were scanned and digitally printed in a larger format. The resulting “print” was then cut and folded into books with hard covers attached. The text can only be read with a digital reader (an app on a smart phone or tablet, though an English version is provided in the pocket of the back cover.) I intend the reading of the book with device to be a kind of adventure: a virtual journey via digital translation."
