An exhibition of works in clay by artist Ritchie Velthuis, Making of a Monument chronicles the process of creating SCTV Monument, a public artwork located in downtown Edmonton’s Ice District, and offers a proud reflection of an iconic Edmonton creation. SCTV Monument is a beloved sculpture of Bob and Doug McKenzie, iconic characters of the Second City Television (SCTV) program filmed in Edmonton in the 1970s and 1980s, which has become a favourite touchstone for tourists and locals alike. In addition to Bob and Doug, Velthuis references other SCTV personality favourites in Making of a Monument. Ritchie Velthuis is a prolific sculptor and cultural activist. Working in a variety of mediums, his art is featured in several prominent public art collections across Alberta.
Join the Alberta Craft Council and Ritchie Velthuis for a Public Artist’s Presentation by Ritchie Velthuis on Wednesday, July 13 from 5-6 pm, followed by a Public Reception from 6-7pm. Attendance is free, and everybody is welcome. Want to see the SCTV Monument in person? Join us as we walk over to the SCTV Monument on 103 Avenue and 103 Street, and finish off at Campio Brewing.
