Linda McBain Cuyler (Edmonton, AB) creates both machine embroidery art and large appliquéd banners from her home studio in Edmonton. “I find inspiration in the natural world - the landscape and lovely snippets of nature. I see everything in bright colours provided by the paint, but I am even more interested in the texture of the fabric and stitching. As an interior designer (Bachelor of Interior Design, University of Manitoba, 1981), I try to create work that will be welcomed into the home and add happiness to the surroundings.”
Each piece that Linda creates is an original artwork with its own variations in colour and stitching. The background is painted with acrylics and then detailed, textured and layered with thread or pearl cotton by free motion embroidery machine stitching. In 2009 Linda was commissioned by the City of Edmonton to create a 9x5 foot long Edmonton cityscape, using her free motion embroidery technique for the Edmonton’s sister city Harbin, China.
